Episode Notes

This month, Caroline and Rachel are talking about Latin American horror, specifically five incredible Latin American women authors - Agustina Bazterrica, Mariana Enriquez, Silvia Moreno Garcia, Isabel Cañas, and Samanta Schweblin. We'll be using Rachel's Hot Possum Horror Meter to signify the fear-factor of each book!

A note from Caroline and Rachel: We are in no way experts on Latin America but we are beyond excited to see what Latin American women authors have been creating in the world of horror. These five incredible authors are just a small selection of the many voices from Latin America - and though we talked a lot about political trauma and agency in this episode, we barely scratched the surface of how gender has been expertly explored by many of these authors as well. We hope to do a deep dive on gender in the future!

There is a wealth of information about the literary heritage and the culture of horror in Latin America available online, but a few great starting places would be this essay by Mariana Enriquez, "Creating a New Tradition of Latin American Horror" or this New York Times article, "For Latin American Women, Horror and Fantasy Capture Everyday Struggle" or this article from Bold Latina, "In Latin America, Horror is Written by Women."
